University Writing Center

  • Please consider adding a statement to your syllabus encouraging students to use the University Writing Center. Here's a model to work from (or copy and paste).

    University Writing Center--RL 136
The University Writing Center (UWC), located on the main floor of Ramsey Library, offers support to writers in 45-minute, one-on-one sessions. UWC consultations are highly recommended but not required. The UWC helps writers: brainstorm; find a topic; incorporate and document sources; organize their drafts; develop revision strategies; and more. If you visit the UWC, take a copy of your assignment, any drafting or notes you may have, as well as any sources you’re working with. To find out more about UWC services, visit their web page at unca.edu/uwc. To schedule an appointment, call 251-6596, or stop by in person during open hours.

  • Writing Guides for Teachers: Helpful writing tools for your students

  • Ramsey Library has created a helpful list of books about writing. If you wish to add citations to this list, please contact Anita White-Carter.

  • The grandparent of all Writing-Intensive websites is the Writing Across the Curriculum Clearinghouse at Colorado State University.

You can access classroom resources through this site or use the links to online archives of writing journals for research purposes.

  • And finally, you might want to check out the method of Calibrated Peer Review.

According to their site, "Calibrated Peer Review (CPR)" is a Web-based program that enables frequent writing assignments even in large classes with limited instructional resources. In fact, CPR can reduce the time an instructor now spends reading and assessing student writing.

"CPR offers instructors the choice of creating their own writing assignments or using the rapidly expanding assignment library. Although CPR stems from a science-based model, CPR has the exciting feature that it is discipline independent and level independent."
