The History of the Music-and what to listen for
This is another traditional form of musical ensemble dating from the
1700s, and though not exclusively American, still widely celebrated in
our country, especially at colleges and universities. A concert band can
also be called a wind symphony or symphonic band, and consists of the
woodwind, brass and percussion instrument families. You’ll hear various
repertoire including original wind compositions, specially arranged
classical items, marches (a holdover from the days when these groups
were military bands) and popular tunes of our day. Though the
instrumentation is similar, it is distinguished from a marching band in
that its primary function is as a concert ensemble. Composers from
Mozart to Holst have written just for these groups.
