I have been working with the SECC since 1988, and I
am committed to this annual fund drive. It is an easy way to make a
contribution to a charitable cause. I think that this year may be more important
than ever in the history of the campaign. There are so many people that are
dependent on many of the campaign's charities. I urge each of us to consider a
donation. No gift is too small.

I believe we should be moving
towards a safer, juster, more humane society, and the donation I can make,
almost painlessly through payroll deduction, to organizations that try to house
the homeless, feed the hungry, and succor the abused, is my modest contribution
toward making that society a reality for more Americans.

My first in-depth experience
with non-profits was raising money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. There, I
actually got to know several people whose lives and whose children's lives had
been saved because of very recent medical breakthroughs funded by charitable
donations.
When a mother or father thanks you because they received gas money to take to
their child to the hospital for treatment -- even when they don't say a word,
but you know you helped make that possible -- there is nothing like that feeling
of knowing you did a little something to help others. It makes me very thankful
for my health and that of my family, and full of gratitude just knowing that
these organizations are there to help any one of us should the need arise.

The SECC
campaign makes it easy for me to feel confident my donation is going to an
organization that I believe is making a difference in our community. The
idea of our campus community coming together to show our commitment to
important causes makes giving collectively an appealing option. I like
knowing that my contribution can make a larger difference through our
combined efforts.
