TheatreUNCA will stage the Tony Award winning
musical comedy "Urinetown" April 22-26 at UNC Asheville's Carol Belk
Theatre. Curtain is 8 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday with a 2 p.m. Sunday
matinee. All shows are open to the public.
"Urinetown," the Broadway hit by Mark Hollman and Greg Kotis,
provides a humorous and cynical view of society, sustainability,
capitalism and government. The musical tells the story of a futurist
Gotham-like city plagued by a 20-year drought. As a result, the
government has banned private bathrooms and the citizens must use
pay toilets regulated by a monopolistic company. A custodian at the
poorest urinal in town decides that enough is enough. With the help
of the townspeople, he leads a rebellion with a surprising ending.
"Urinetown" is directed by Drama Department Chair Rob Bowen with
musical direction by Adjunct Professor Ruth Seiber-Johnson and
choreography by senior Cherie Holmes. Designers include Rob Berls on
set; senior Alina Gerall on costumes; senior Lisa Huie and Bowen on
lights; and Bowen and junior Casey Morris on sound. The 27-member
cast includes UNC Asheville students and faculty.
Tickets for all performances are $15 general admission, $12 for
senior citizens and $10 for students. Because of the intimate size
of UNC Asheville's Carol Belk Theatre and the often heavy demand for
tickets, advance purchase is strongly advised. Tickets may be
ordered by phone calling 828/232-2291 between 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
weekdays. Tickets are also available at the box office one hour
before curtain and online at
www.unca.edu/drama.
