The Universe is yours to discover at two star
gazing events celebrating the International Year of Astronomy. The
viewings, held on the evenings of April 3 and 4, will take place in
front of Pack Place Education, Arts & Science Center. The Health
Adventure, UNC Asheville, and amateur astronomers from the area will
be coordinating the events.
The International Year of Astronomy 2009 (IYA2009) is a global
celebration of astronomy and its contributions to society and
culture. The occasion also marks the 400th anniversary of the first
use of an astronomical telescope by Galileo Galilei—a historic event
that initiated astronomical discoveries and triggered a scientific
revolution that profoundly affected our worldview.
In Asheville, efforts are being coordinated to include public
observing of the moon, Saturn and the stars. Telescopes will be set
up at Pack Place on the evenings of Friday and Saturday, April 3 and
4. In case of rain or cloudy skies that prevent good viewing,
Sunday, April 5 has been reserved as a back-up date. UNC Asheville
will also have telescopes set up on the quad the evening of
Saturday, April 4, with Sunday, April 5 as a back-up date. Viewings
at both locations will begin after 8:30 p.m.
“The International Year of Astronomy 2009 gives all nations a chance
to participate in this ongoing exciting scientific and technological
revolution,” said International Astronomical Union President,
Catherine Cesarsky. The aim is to stimulate worldwide interest in
astronomy and science. In particular, organizers hope to inspire
young people to learn more about the Universe and our place in it.
To date, 99 nations and 14 organizations have signed up to
participate in the IYA2009‚ an unprecedented network of dedicated
communicators and educators in astronomy.
