The North Carolina Center for Creative
Retirement (NCCCR) will offer a series of hands-on summer workshops.
The courses, which are open to students of all ages and skills, will
take place May through September at UNC Asheville's Reuter Center.
NCCCR webmaster Mike Honeycutt will teach "Excel 2007 for the
Nervous Beginner" 6-8 p.m. Thursday, May 28 and 10 a.m.-noon
Saturday, June 6. The workshop will cover basics of Microsoft Excel
2007 with topics including basic spreadsheet, navigation, entering
text, numbers and formulas, shortcuts and tips. The cost for the
workshop is $25. The registration deadline is May 29.
Master thread craftswoman Julie Simpson will teach "Creating an
18-inch Cloth Character Doll" from 9 a.m.-noon Friday, June 26, and
9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. June 27-28. Simpson will guide participants through
all phases of doll construction from sewing and shaping to costume
and accessories. Participants must bring a sewing machine, basic
sewing supplies, materials for the doll costume and matching threads
to class. Additional embellishments will be available in-class for a
$10 fee. The cost for the workshop is $125. The registration
deadline is June 12.
Photographer Richard Bernabe will teach "Outdoor Digital
Photography" 6 -7:30 p.m. Friday, August 21, and 4:30 a.m.-10 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday, August 22-23. The workshop will include
shooting on location at the Blue Ridge Parkway and working in a
digital darkroom. Pre-requisites include familiarity with a camera
and with Photoshop or other photo editing software. The cost for the
workshop is $175. The registration deadline is August 7.
Photographer Bill Roskind will lead a workshop on "Selecting/Using
Digital Cameras Effectively" 9 a.m.-noon Monday, Sept. 14,
Wednesday, Sept. 16 and Friday, Sept. 18. The workshop will focus on
how to select the right camera and how to use the camera's essential
features. The workshop will also assist participants who are
transitioning from a film camera to a digital camera. The cost for
the workshop is $100. The registration deadline is August 28.
