UNC Asheville's Music Department will continue
its fall concert season with five performances in November, ranging
from jazz to chamber music. The concerts, which will be held on
campus, feature faculty, student and guest musicians. Admission is
$5 at the door.
The UNC Asheville Jazz Ensemble will present a big band concert at 4
p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, at UNC Asheville’s Lipinsky Auditorium. UNC
Asheville students will perform pieces by Duke Ellington, Hoagy
Carmichael and ensemble director David Wilken. Melodie Galloway,
assistant professor of music at UNC Asheville, will be a guest
singer with the band.
The UNC Asheville Chamber Singers will perform “Arts in the Atrium:
A Musical Experience in Choral Sound-Painting,” at 4 p.m. on Sunday,
Nov. 8, in UNC Asheville’s Highsmith University Union Grotto. Under
the direction of Melodie Galloway, the advanced vocal ensemble will
perform repertoire from renaissance, baroque and modern composers.
Many of the pieces will be performed a cappella.
UNC Asheville student ensembles, including the Flute Choir, String
Quartet and Brass Quintet will perform at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15, at
UNC Asheville’s Lipinsky Auditorium. The student performers are
under the direction of Judi Lampert, Inez Redman and Casey
Coppenbarger.
The UNC Asheville Percussion Ensemble will perform at 7:30 p.m.
Thursday, Nov. 19, at UNC Asheville’s Lipinsky Auditorium. The
concert will include the premier of student compositions by Benjamin
Falcon and Reid Weigner, as well as a modern interpretation of
traditional Brazilian samba rhythms.
The UNC Asheville Chamber Orchestra will perform a concert of
classical music at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 22, at UNC Asheville’s
Lipinsky Auditorium. The performance will include music by Bach,
Vivaldi, Mozart and Handel. Featured soloists include UNC Asheville
students Sarah Fouharty, Amanda Fujikawa, Sara Kabliska, Aurora
Keeler, Holly Rhymes and Erica Schinasi, and UNC Asheville alumna
Maria Potapov. The orchestra is conducted by Ron Clearfield.
