March 29

UNC Asheville's Center for Jewish Studies will host a performance of "The Beauty, the Passion, the Heartbreak: Israel, 60 Years of Song" by celebrated Jewish singer Danny Maseng at 7 p.m. Sunday, March 29, at The Grey Eagle, 185 Clingman Ave., Asheville. This one-man show is the seventh annual Deutsch Family Concert. Tickets are $18 general admission and $12 for area students.

Born in Israel to American parents, Maseng first came to the United States in 1971 to star on Broadway in "Only Fools are Sad." A playwright, actor, singer and composer, he has served as director of "Have Nashira," the Spielberg Fellowships and the Jewish Arts Institute. His off-Broadway musical, "Wasting Time with Harry Davidowitz" and his concert "Soul on Fire" are critically-acclaimed productions.

In addition to his life as a secular performer, Maseng has become one of the most respected composers of contemporary liturgical and synagogue music. He has been the invited guest of the American Conference of Cantors, the Cantor's Assembly and the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra. He recently joined the clergy team at Temple Israel of Hollywood in California, where he serves as the new musical director.

Seating is limited; advance purchase of tickets is strongly advised. Tickets are available at The Grey Eagle or by calling 800/594-TIXX. Tickets are also available at Congregation Beth HaTephila, Congregation Beth Israel, Harvest Records, Orbit DVD and the Jewish Community Center of Asheville.
