UNC Asheville’s Craft Campus will launch its
year-long lecture series, “Meet the Maker: Conversations of Meaning
with Craftspeople,” this month. This fall series of events will
focus on discussions with craftspeople in various media, including
jewelry, blacksmithing, sculpture, glass making and painting. The
series will also include screenings of the PBS series “Craft in
America.”
--Tuesday, Sept. 29: William Schaaf, a painter and sculptor, will
lecture on his work. He works in stone, wood and clay, and often
uses Native American themes. This event will take place at 12:30
p.m. in UNC Asheville’s Owen Hall, room 237, and is free and open to
the public.
--Wednesday, Sept. 30: Special guest Mark Hewitt will introduce
“Origins” and “Process,” the next two episodes in the Peabody Award
winning PBS series “Craft in America.” Hewitt, a prominent North
Carolina potter, is featured in the “Craft in America” series. Using
local clays, Hewitt blends the different North Carolinian folk
traditions together into a contemporary style. His work has been
featured in the Smithsonian Magazine and on the cover of American
Craft magazine, and he has exhibited in London, New York and Tokyo.
The screening will take place at 7 p.m. at the Fine Arts Theater, 36
Biltmore Ave. All proceeds will benefit the Sylva Billue Memorial
Wood Studies Scholarship Fund and UNC Asheville’s “Meet the Maker”
lecture series. Admission is $10 at the door, $3 for students with
ID, and free for children 12 and under.
--Thursday, Oct. 1: A screening of “Origins” and “Process,” the next

held for “Origins” and “Process,” the next two episodes in the
Peabody Award winning PBS series “Craft in America.” The viewing
will take place at 7:30 p.m. at UNC Asheville’s Highsmith University
Union Grotto. This event is free and open to the public.
--Tuesday, Oct. 27: Carl Powell, a National Endowment for the Arts
recipient, will speak on his work as a glass artist. The speech will
take place at 12:30 p.m. at UNC Asheville’s Owen Hall, room 237.
From 6-8 p.m. Powell will have an open studio and reception at
Grovewood Gallery. These events are free and open to the public.
--Thursday, Nov. 12: Suzanne Ramljak, a writer, historian and
current editor of “Metalsmith” magazine, will speak about the UNC
Center for Craft, Creativity and Design exhibition, “Different
Tempers: Jewelry and Blacksmithing.” The event will take place at 6
p.m. at UNC Asheville’s Owen Hall Conference Room. It is free and
open to the public.
