UNC Asheville and A-B Technical Community
College will host two distance learning courses designed for
employed lateral entry teachers this fall. These two eight-week are
designed for teachers who have their own classrooms and are seeking
alternative licensing through the Regional Alternative Licensing
Center.
"EDU 373: Teaching Reading in the Content Areas" is a three-credit
hour teleconference course. The class will be held 5:30-9 p.m. on
Tuesdays August 18-October 6 at teleconference locations on the
campuses of UNC Asheville, Blue Ridge Community College and UNC
Pembroke. During the course, participants will prepare lessons to
engage students in active learning, research and report on the
successes of strategies used and develop units that integrate
reading strategies and infuse elements of the writing process. Cost
for North Carolina residents is $267.30 plus a one-time
non-refundable $20 application fee.
An online course, "EDU 273: Learning Theory," will be offered on
Tuesdays October 13-December 1. This course provides an introduction
to learning theory, familiarity with various styles of learning and
motivational factors involved in the learning process. Emphasis will
be placed on the development of cognitive skills using the seven
types of intelligence and the application of these to practical
classroom situations. Tuition for North Carolina residents is $140
for this three-credit hour course.
