UNC Asheville to Host Lecture on Title VI by Attorney Terry Hodges

UNC Asheville will host a lecture by compliance attorney M. Terry Hodges at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, in UNC Asheville’s Humanities Lecture Hall. The lecture, “What is Title VI and How Will it Impact My Career?” will address Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This law prevents discrimination by government agencies that receive federal funding. The lecture will consider Title VI as it pertains to the Limited English Proficiency populations of North Carolina. A question-and-answer forum with local health and human services interpretation representatives will follow the lecture. The event is free and open to the public.

Hodges is currently the only Title VI compliance attorney in North Carolina. The panel joining Hodges includes Laura Cooper, Buncombe County Medical Society; Debbie Duncan, Buncombe County Health Center; and Ralph Garcia, Mission Hospital. Additional topics for discussion will include the changing demographics of foreign languages in North Carolina, Title VI compliance and other minority issues.

UNC Asheville senior Spanish major Daniel Holcombe will moderate the forum. Holcombe is president of the Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Spanish Honor Society, and chairperson of the Executive Bureau of the North Carolina Professional Interpreters Association.

For more information, call Daniel Holcombe at 828/775-9152.
