Mike Wiley will perform on
April 3 |
UNC Asheville's Center for Diversity Education
brings actor Mike Wiley to the stage in "Brown vs. Board of
Education: 50 Years Later." Wiley will perform his one-man play at
12:30 p.m. Thursday, April 3, at UNC Asheville's Humanities Lecture
Hall. The event is free and open to the public.
Wiley will take the role of a host of historical figures, including
Thurgood Marshall, Earl Warren and Linda Brown, in this play about
the 1954 Supreme Court decision that declared the "separate but
equal" precedent set by Plessy v. Ferguson unconstitutional. The
performance, which is geared towards audiences in grades seven and
up, encapsulates the high impact ruling for desegregating schools.
Wiley has been involved in theater for young audiences for more than
10 years. He seeks to expand cultural awareness by portraying
pivotal events to unveil a richer picture of the American
experience. Wiley, who holds a bachelor of fine arts degree from UNC
Chapel Hill, has performed in many one-man plays, including "One
Noble Journey," "Jackie Robinson: A Game Apart," "Dar He: The
Lynching of Emmett Till" and "Tired Souls."
