UNC Asheville student group Hispanic Outreach
for Learning Awareness (HOLA) will host a "Know Your Rights"
workshop from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, March 30, at UNC Asheville's
Alumni Hall, Highsmith University Union. The event is free and open
to the public.
The workshop, which will be conducted in Spanish, will provide
information to the Hispanic immigrant community about their rights
and how to create emergency plans for their families. The workshop
will also feature interactive discussions on immigrant rights prior
to the development of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Founded in March 2003, ICE is the largest investigative branch of
the Department of Homeland Security. It was created by combining the
law enforcement arms of the former Immigration and Naturalization
Service and the former U.S. Customs Service to more effectively
enforce immigration and customs laws.
