UNC Asheville's Lead Poisoning Prevention Program will host a course covering proper testing and mitigation systems for radon, ways to identify and remove mold, and ways to check for lead paint and determine what constitutes a lead hazard. The course will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, at UNC Asheville's Owen Conference Center . The class is designed for real estate agents and is worth four continuing education units. Property managers and home owners are also welcome to attend.

Radon, mold and lead in homes have known adverse health effects. Radon, an odorless, tasteless and invisible gas, claims 20,000 lives annually and is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. Mold can trigger asthma attacks, while lead can affect the IQ and development of young children as well as the health of adults.

The course will be taught by three local experts, including Linda Block, UNC Asheville's Lead Poisoning Prevention Program coordinator, Catherine Rosfjord of the N.C. Radon Program, and Ashley Featherstone of the WNC Regional Air Quality Agency.
