John G. Pierce |
John G. Pierce, former Vice President and CFO
of Sonopress, has been named Vice Chancellor for Finance and Campus
Operations at UNC Asheville. The appointment was made by the UNC
Asheville Board of Trustees at its meeting on July 10, upon
recommendation by UNC Asheville Chancellor Anne Ponder. Pierce will
start his new position in mid-August.
"John has a demonstrated record of mastery in finance in the private
sector and brings significant experience with complex systems and
institutions. That combination of talents is just what we need in a
leader for this area," said Chancellor Ponder. "It is an additional
pleasure that he is already well known and loved for his dedication
and service to the greater Asheville community. We are thrilled to
welcome him to UNC Asheville."
As Vice Chancellor, Pierce will assume leadership over all functions
and operations of the University related to finance and campus
operations. Among his job responsibilities will be to oversee,
direct, and manage the fiscal and operational affairs of the
University; collaborate with the University’s senior management team
in the preparation and implementation of the University’s financial
plans; and help improve systems to provide institutional oversight
for the financial operations of the University.
“I am honored to join the UNC Asheville community and look forward
to this opportunity," Pierce said. "UNC Asheville has earned a
wonderful reputation as one of the leading public liberal arts
universities in the nation and is a vital part of the local
community. I have been in Asheville for more than 20 years and now
look forward to being a part of the great tradition at the
University.”
Pierce comes to the position with more than 20 years of chief
financial officer experience. Most recently, he served as Vice
President of Finance and CFO of Sonopress (now Arvato Digital
Services), located in Weaverville, one of the largest CD and DVD
manufacturers in the United States. During his seven years with
Sonopress, he managed a staff of 32, including finance, credit,
billing, quoting and purchasing staff. Pierce served as a key
negotiator of the SonyBMG worldwide manufacturing agreement for
Sonopress. In addition, through increased efficiencies, he
significantly reduced the company's information technology
expenditures.
Previously, Pierce served as CFO at M.B. Haynes
Corporation/Telephone Systems of Asheville and Beacon Manufacturing
Co. Earlier in his career, Pierce was the cost and inventory
accounting manager at RJR Archer and an audit supervisor at Ernst &
Ernst in Winston-Salem. He holds a bachelor's degree in accounting
from Wake Forest University and is a certified public accountant.
