The UNC Asheville Board of Trustees elected new officers at its 2008-09 meeting July 10 on the UNC Asheville campus. Al Whitesides, vice president of Mountain 1st Bank & Trust, was elected chair; Pam Turner, Asheville community leader, was elected vice chair; and Dr. David Cogburn, an Asheville dermatologist and a 1977 alumnus of UNC Asheville, was elected secretary.

The board also welcomed its newest trustee, Phil Carson, an Asheville attorney. Carson previously served for 22 years on the University of North Carolina Board of Governors and for four years on the UNC-Chapel Hill Board of Trustees.

The UNC Asheville Board of Trustees has 13 members; eight are appointed by the UNC Board of Governors and four are appointed by the governor. The UNC Asheville Student Government Association president, who is elected by the student body, also sits on the board. The UNC Asheville Board of Trustees promotes the sound development of the University and serves as advisor to the UNC Board of Governors and the UNC Asheville chancellor.
