UNC Asheville's Music Department will host a
jazz concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, at UNC Asheville's Lipinsky
Auditorium. The lineup includes the UNC Asheville Jazz Choir, the
UNC Asheville Jazz Ensemble and the Asheville Jazz Orchestra.
Tickets are $5 general admission.
The UNC Asheville Jazz Choir, directed by Melodie Galloway, is an
advanced vocal choir that performs a wide variety of music. They
will sing arrangements of classic swing standards by Duke Ellington
and Benny Goodman. Also known as Studio 18, the Jazz Choir performs
in both formal and informal concerts. Last December, they traveled
to Washington, D.C., to sing at the White House, Walter Reed
Memorial Hospital, the Koshland Science Museum and the Annondale
United Methodist Church.
The UNC Asheville Jazz Ensemble, directed by David Wilken, UNC
Asheville's coordinator of jazz studies, is a 19-piece big band. The
ensemble consists of both UNC Asheville student jazz performers and
community members. They will perform music composed and arranged by
Dave Barduhn of the Stan Kenton Orchestra and Sammy Nestico of the
Count Basie Orchestra in addition to some of Wilken's personal
works.
The concert will close with Asheville's only professional big band,
the Asheville Jazz Orchestra. They will perform a wide selection of
music ranging from classics of the Swing Era to music composed by
members of the band.
