UNC Asheville Students Participate in 11-Day "Movement for Peace Project"

UNC Asheville students will join Moving Women, a collaborative dance performance ensemble, for the "Movement for Peace Project" September 11-21. The 11-day series of events are designed to inspire, inform and involve the local community leading up to the United Nation's International Day of Peace on September 21. Free events will be held throughout the city, including the UNC Asheville campus, Pritchard Park and the Asheville School.

Events at UNC Asheville or those featuring students include:

  • An informational booth featuring Western North Carolina peace-building organizations will be setup 9 a.m.-3 p.m. September 15-19 at UNC Asheville's Health & Fitness Center lobby.

  • UNC Asheville Drama Department students, under the direction of UNC Asheville Associate Professor of Drama Scott Walters, will present "Theatre for Living Interactive Drama" at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, at UNC Asheville's Carol Belk Theatre.

  • A workshop on non-violent communications will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, in UNC Asheville's Laurel Forum, Karpen Hall. The workshop will be led by Jerry Donoghue, an Asheville-based professional communications coach. The workshop is free but registration is required. Call 828/215-2410 to sign up.

  • A moving meditation and moment of silence will be held at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 21, on the lawn near UNC Asheville's Weizenblatt Health Center.

The "Movement for Peace Project" and Moving Women are the brainchild of Kathy Meyers, UNC Asheville adjunct professor of dance. Meyers has taught dance in private studios, public schools, community colleges and universities throughout the east coast. A noted choreographer and collaborator, Meyers has also performed in ballet and modern dance companies as well as in festivals in the United States, Cuba and Mexico.
