UNC Asheville to Host Latin Teacher Recruitment Week Event

Nancy Hanover
Nancy Hanover

UNC Asheville's Classics Department, in cooperation with the Classical Association of the Middle West and South and the American Classical League, will host a reception and talk on "Latin is FUNdamental" by retired Latin teacher Nancy Hanover at 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 29, in UNC Asheville's Laurel Forum, Karpen Hall. The talk, which will kick off National Latin Teacher Recruitment Week March 3-7, is free and open to the public.

Hanover's presentation will focus on the benefits of teaching Latin, as there is currently a national shortage of qualified Latin teachers. All those who are interested in the study and teaching of Latin, including teachers, students and administrators, are encouraged to attend. Snacks, door prizes and information about Latin teacher training will be provided. Local area Latin teachers will also receive packets of promotional items for distribution to their students.

Hanover is a Greensboro native who grew up in Asheville. Her interest in teaching Latin took her to New York state, where she spent most of her 50-year career. In 1998, she returned to Asheville, where she currently teaches Latin at the North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement.

For more information, contact Lora Holland, UNC Asheville associate professor of classics, at 828/232-5043.
