UNC Asheville Celebrates Homecoming February 21-23

Get ready for a weekend of royalty, Bulldog style. UNC Asheville will hold its Homecoming 2008 celebration February 21-23 with activities fit for kings and queens. Special events range from a sold-out men's basketball game to the annual alumni art show.

Homecoming 2008 events are as follows:

Thursday, Feb. 21

• UNC Asheville's 12th annual homecoming parade will roll down University Heights at 12:30 p.m. with floats from a host of UNC Asheville student organizations and departments. For the first time, participating groups will vie not only for the prize of best float, but they will also perform for the judges in hopes of winning the best performance prize. A pep rally will follow at Reed Plaza. The event is free and open to the public.

Friday, Feb. 22

• The annual UNC Asheville Alumni Art Exhibition opening reception will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Highsmith University Union Gallery. The show, which includes 44 pieces of media ranging from photography to assemblage, will be on display through February 28. Artists include alumni from the classes of 1989-2007. The event is free and open to the public.

• The Langston Hughes Project will present "Ask Your Mama: 12 Moods for Jazz" at 8 p.m. in UNC Asheville's Lipinsky Auditorium. The performance will bring the Harlem Renaissance to life by setting to music the 800-line, 12-part poetic suite written by Langston Hughes in 1961. The poems will be read aloud to the accompaniment of live jazz featuring The Ron McCurdy Trio and video images of the Harlem Renaissance by African-American artists and photographers. General admission tickets are $15; $6 for all area students. To reserve tickets by phone, call UNC Asheville's Highsmith University Union Box Office at 828/232-5000. Tickets may be purchased online at www.uncatickets.com. A limited number of tickets will be available with cash or check at only two locations in downtown Asheville: YMI Cultural Center, 39 South Market St., and Malaprop's Bookstore/Café, 55 Haywood St. Patrons may call the YMI at 828/257-4530 or Malaprop's at 828/254-6734 to check availability.
