Local Author, Filmmaker to Offer Free Video Production Workshop

The free workshop will be based on
Dr. Diefenbach's new book

Local filmmaker and author Donald Diefenbach will host a free video production workshop at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, at Malaprop's Bookstore/Café, 55 Haywood St., downtown Asheville. Diefenbach, author of the recent book "Video Production Techniques: Theory and Practice from Concept and Screen," will discuss the foundations for getting started in video production and will answer audience questions. The event is free and open to the public.

The workshop will draw upon Diefenbach’s critically acclaimed new book, "Video Production Techniques." The book introduces every stage of the video production process for a number of applications, including advertising, education, corporate, shorts, episodic television, news, documentary and features. The companion DVD provides original demonstrations, clips from professional works, and interviews with film and video professionals.

The book and companion DVD feature production stills and video clips from many Western North Carolina production companies including The Alpha Group, Bclip Productions, Blue Ridge Motion Pictures, Bonesteel Films, Harrow Beauty, Ironwood Media Group, Oliver Media Services, ProComm Studio Services and Tabula Rasa Studios.

Diefenbach is associate professor of Mass Communication at UNC Asheville. He teaches video production, media effects, and film studies courses. Diefenbach’s research focuses on media violence, media portrayals of mental health issues, and television content analysis. He is a member of the Asheville Film Festival advisory committee and chair of educational programming for the festival. His video production credits include educational, corporate and nationally broadcast programming. He holds degrees in film, philosophy and mass communication from Pennsylvania State University and the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University.

For more information, call Diefenbach at 828/251-6731.

Reviews for "Video Production Techniques" by Donald Diefenbach

"The modest title of this book doesn't begin to reflect the ambitious scope of its design. From heady aesthetic theories to an explanation of the LLP form, Video Production Techniques provides one-stop shopping for theory, production, and business. Students of media criticism and the media industry would benefit from this book as much as students of production. After twenty-five years of teaching, I learned a lot from reading it." -- Robert Thompson, Director, Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture, and Trustee Professor, The Newhouse School, Syracuse University

"In the ever-evolving business of television and film, it's nice to know that there is a source so accurately assembled, so dense with dynamic information, and at the end of the day, easy and enjoyable to read. Donald Diefenbach has put together an invaluable guide that I'm sure will be the bible for both young and experienced filmmakers alike." -- Brett Weitz, Vice President, fox21, division of 20th Century Fox Television

"I've been reading books that tell you how to make movies since the 1960s and this is far and away the best I've encountered. It covers every aspect of the film and video making process in a fresh, authoritative, readable and clear fashion. It doesn't forget the art of film while teaching the craft of it."
-- Ken Hanke, film critic and author of "Ken Russell’s Films," "Charlie Chan at the Movies" and "A Critical Guide to Horror Film Series"
