UNC Asheville to Host Talk on Brazilian Art and Architecture

UNC Asheville will host a talk by Geraldo de Souza Dias, professor of art at the University of Sao Paulo and visiting professor at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, in UNC Asheville's Humanities Lecture Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

De Souza Dias, a recent Fulbright Scholar, will discuss Brazilian art and architecture as well as his own artwork and research on the theme of "Word and Image-- the Introduction of Codes of Writing into Works of Visual Art."

A native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, de Souza Dias studied architecture at the University of Sao Paulo and painting at Pratt Institute in New York, where he received his master of fine arts degree. In 2000, he received his doctorate in philosophy and theory of art from the Universiaet der Kuenste Berlin. As an artist, he has shown his works all over the world, including Rio de Janeiro, New York, Boston, London, Berlin, Frankfurt and Lisbon. He has taught at a host of universities, including Marymount College in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., and the Institute of Art, Design and Marketing in Lisbon.
