UNC Asheville will host "I Got Soul: An Evening of Powerful Poetics" at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 26, in UNC Asheville's Highsmith University Student Union, Alumni Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

A variety of female artists are slated to perform. Local hip hop and spoken word duo Gaia Resurrect and UNC Asheville students will join headliner Monica Daye to give readings and performances in celebration of National Poetry Month.

Daye is an award-winning poet from Durham and founder of Stand Up Speak Out, a sexual assault and domestic violence prevention organization. She travels nationwide, combining song, story-telling and poetry with her message of preventing sexual violence. Daye is the recipient of the "Community Oriented Underground Poet" Award from the National Underground Spoken Word Poetry Awards. She is author of "And You Thought You Had Problems," a poetry collection and autobiography.

The event is sponsored by UNC Asheville's Multicultural Student Programs, Underdog Productions and Gaia Resurrect Productions.

For more information, call event coordinator Nina Collins at 919/923-1128.
