UNC Asheville seniors Elizabeth Morgan and Eva
Reitzel will hold a joint art exhibition November 30-December 12 in
UNC Asheville's Highsmith University Union Gallery. An opening
reception will be held from 6-9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, in the
gallery. The exhibition is the culmination of Morgan and Reitzel's
work toward bachelor of arts degrees at UNC Asheville. Both the
opening reception and the exhibition are free and open to the
public.
"Awkward as You," featuring 14 prints by Elizabeth Morgan, combines
traditional printing methods with contemporary scenes of
uncomfortable images that are simultaneously funny and disturbing.
"We all have embarrassing moments and get caught in uncomfortable
situations. What truly defines our individual character is how we
deal with these insecurities: we must learn to laugh at ourselves,"
Morgan said.
"Fancy," a collection of two series of drawings by Eva Reitzel,
explores the line between fiction and reality by portraying fairy
tales and myths as tools used to govern human behavior. "The first
drawings illustrate 'Year of Wonders,' a historical novel about the
Plague in 17th century Britain. The book reflects dark adventures
that the narrator's pampered standard of life does not typically
allow; it provides romantic escapism while still appealing to human
universals," Reitzel said. The second series of drawings are based
on Reitzel's personal childhood memories.
The gallery, which is located on the lower level of UNC Asheville's
Highsmith University Union, is open 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Friday and
9 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday when classes are in session but
hours are subject to change.
