Registration is now open for the N.C. Center
for Creative Retirement’s free computer literacy classes for
underserved adults ages 50 and over. Funded through a grant from
Smith Barney, the classes are designed to reach local low-income and
minority seniors. Space is limited; early registration is suggested.
The deadline to apply is Monday, Sept. 17.
The classes will meet in the Reuter Center on the UNC Asheville
campus beginning the week of September 24 for six weeks. Classes
will not meet the week of October 8-12 in observance of Fall Break.
Four classes are available this fall. Two beginner classes will be
offered, one on Mondays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and the second on
Thursdays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. For those with basic computer
skills, an advanced beginner course is offered on Mondays from 2:30
to 4:30 p.m. An Advanced Special Topics class will meet from 2:30 to
4:30 p.m. on Thursdays beginning September 27.
To date, more than 500 seniors have participated in the N.C. Center
for Creative Retirement's computer literacy courses. Classes are
taught by skilled UNC Asheville undergraduates who are trained and
supervised by campus experts. Participants learn basic computer
skills, how to use e-mail and the Internet, and how to find and log
on to free public computers.
Local Dial-A-Ride bus service is available to the Reuter Center.
