N.C. Center for Creative Retirement Offers Free Computer Literacy Classes

Registration is now open for the North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement’s free computer literacy classes for underserved adults ages 50 and older. Funded through a grant from Smith Barney, the classes are designed to serve local low-income and minority seniors. Space is limited. Application deadline is Friday, March 2.

Four classes are available this spring. All will meet at the Reuter Center on the UNC Asheville campus for five consecutive weeks.

Two beginner classes are offered. The first will meet from 9 to 11 a.m. on Mondays beginning March 12. Another will meet from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Thursdays beginning March 15. An advanced beginner class will meet on Mondays from 2 to 4 p.m. beginning March 12. An advanced special topics course will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on Thursdays beginning March 15.

To date, more than 440 seniors have participated in the North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement’s computer literacy courses. Classes are taught by skilled UNC Asheville undergraduates who are trained and supervised by campus experts. Participants will learn basic computer skills, how to use e-mail and the Internet. They will also find out how to access free public computers in the area.

Local Dial-A-Ride bus service is available to the Reuter Center. Call the Asheville Transit Authority at 828/253-5691 to request drop off or pick up at the Reuter Center.

For more information or to request an application, call the North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement at 828/251-6140 or e-mail pcameron@unca.edu.
