Do you want to get more involved in your
community but aren’t sure how? Consider participating in the North
Carolina Center for Creative Retirement’s Leadership Training for
Older Persons (LTOP). This free, six-week course is designed to
teach leadership skills and help participants gain the confidence
and experience to better serve their communities.
During the course, participants will develop
practical skills in leading groups, conducting meetings, team
building, project planning and public speaking. After completion of
the formal classes, participants will get the opportunity to put
their skills into practice through simple but meaningful community
projects.
This year’s class will have a special focus on
health promotion and disease prevention.
“This year, we are excited to offer not only
practical leadership skills but also the added benefit of conveying
important information on health and wellness," said Patti Cameron,
LTOP coordinator. "It is our hope that participants will come away
from this program not only being informed leaders but also strong
advocates for increased well-being in their communities."
Over the past five years, three LTOP classes
have been offered. Some 120 community members have graduated from
the program.
LTOP will meet on the UNC Asheville campus from
9:30 a.m.-3 p.m. on Tuesdays from August 7-September 11. The course
is free and open to adults of all ages but preference will be given
to underserved and minority residents of our community. The
application deadline is August 1.
