UNC Asheville Board of Trustees to Meet March 21UNC Asheville's Board of Trustees will hold a special called meeting at noon Wednesday, March 21, in Phillips Hall room 251. The purpose of the meeting is to consider a recommendation to name the University's Math Lab in memory of Joe Parsons, mathematics professor emeritus. The meeting is open to the public. Portions of the meeting may be closed to the public under the provision of the North Carolina Open Meetings Act. Parsons served in UNC Asheville's Mathematics Department from 1952 to 1980. In addition, he acted as Dean of Students and helped shape the University's first four-year curriculum. After retirement, Parsons founded a mathematics scholarship which provides some $2,500 for students each year. Parsons died in September 2006. The UNC Asheville Board of Trustees has 13 members; eight are appointed by the UNC Board of Governors and four are appointed by the governor. The UNC Asheville Student Government Association president, who is elected by the student body, also sits on the board. The UNC Asheville Board of Trustees promotes the sound development of the University and serves as advisor to the Board of Governors and the chancellor.
