UNC Asheville Wraps Up Spring Concert Season with Five Concerts in AprilUNC Asheville’s Music Department will wrap up its spring concert season with five performances in April. Admission is $5 at the door. The UNC Asheville Percussion Ensemble will perform a range of works from Mozart to a score from the movie “The Last of the Mohicans” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 6, in Lipinsky Auditorium. In addition to performing works by Carlos Chavez, Jeffrey Peyton and Sonny Rollins, they will also debut two original compositions. UNC Asheville biology major and violinist Ginger Kowal and UNC Asheville Adjunct Instructor and pianist Elsa O’Farrell will present a recital bridging the gap between student and teacher with the music of Bach, Brahms and Prokofiev at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 8, in Lipinsky Auditorium, room 018. Kowal, a sophomore, has studied and performed classical music in Michigan, Ohio and New Zealand. O’Farrell is a classically-trained pianist who specializes in playing chamber music, especially with violinists and other stringed instrumentalists. She teaches class piano at UNC Asheville. The Third Annual Invitational Jazz Festival will be held Saturday, April 22, in Lipinsky Auditorium. High school jazz ensembles will perform for clinicians throughout the day. The UNC Asheville Jazz Lab Band will then take center stage at 5 p.m. with special guest drummer Duffy Jackson. A variety of UNC Asheville jazz combos will present vocal and instrumental selections at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 27, in Lipinsky Auditorium. Students will perform under the direction of David Wilken, UNC Asheville assistant professor of music; Frances Sinclair, Coastal Carolina University director of choral activities; and the UNC Asheville Jazz Studies faculty. The UNC Asheville Concert Band, University Singers, String Ensemble and String Quartet will perform at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 30, in Lipinsky Auditorium.
