UNC Asheville to Offer Online Lateral Entry Teaching CourseUNC Asheville will offer a distance learning course designed for lateral entry teachers beginning in January. The three-credit hour course, “Education Psychology for Lateral Entry Teachers,” will be offered via teleconference at four different locations: UNC Asheville, McDowell Technical Community College in Marion, Tri-County Community College in Murphy, and at Blue Ridge Community College in Hendersonville. Classes will be held from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays from January 16-March 6. The course is designed for teachers who have their own classrooms and are seeking alternative licensing through the Regional Alternative Licensing Center. The course will emphasize the applications of psychological theory and research to the learning processes of teaching diverse learners and students with special needs. Students will be exposed to the applied examination and understanding of interventions, instructional practices, disabilities, public school law, policy, assessment, and testing in educational settings. Thirty hours of class time will be spent in videoconferencing and 15 hours using online technology. Tuition is $237.57 plus a $20 non-refundable application fee. In addition, students must have access to a computer with Microsoft Word and internet connection.
