UNC Asheville to Offer On-line Lateral Entry Teaching CourseUNC Asheville will host a distance learning course designed for lateral entry teachers this fall. The three-credit hour course, “Teaching Reading in the Content Area for Lateral Entry Teachers,” will be offered via teleconference at three different locations: UNC Asheville, McDowell Technical Community College in Marion, and at Tri-County Community College in Murphy. Classes will be held from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays from October 17-December 3. The course is designed for teachers who have their own classrooms and are seeking alternative licensing through the Regional Alternative Licensing Center. The course will instruct teachers how to engage students in active learning, develop units that integrate reading strategies and infuse elements of the writing process. Thirty hours of class time will be spent in videoconferencing and 15 hours using online technology. Tuition is $237.57 plus a $20 non-refundable application fee. In addition, students must have a computer with Microsoft Word and Internet access.
