UNC Asheville's Center for Jewish Studies to Host an Evening with
Gershom Gorenberg;
Author to Discuss Acclaimed New Book on Israeli Settlements
UNC Asheville’s Center for Jewish Studies will host
an evening with noted Jewish writer Gershom Gorenberg at 7:30 p.m.
Tuesday, March 28, at UNC Asheville’s Owen Conference Center. Gorengerg
will discuss his latest book, “The Accidental Empire: Israel and the
Birth of the Settlements, 1967-1977.” The event is free and open to the
public.
Released earlier this month, “The Accidental
Empire” is the story of the settler movement. It is a dramatic,
historical account featuring the leaders of Israeli history, including
Golda Meri, Levi Eshkol, Ariel Sharon and others. In the book, Gorenberg
also examines how U.S. presidents Johnson, Nixon and Ford reacted to the
movement.
“The Accidental Empire” earned a starred review
from Booklist, which noted that “Given recent developments in both
Israeli- and Palestinian-controlled areas, this is a timely, vital, and
even riveting analysis of how the current territorial and ethnic Gordian
knot developed.”
American-born Gorenberg is the Israel correspondent
for The Forward. He is the author of “The End of Days: Fundamentalism
and the Struggle for the Temple Mount” and co-author of “Shalom, Friend:
The Life and Legacy of Yitzhak Rabin.” He has written for numerous
newspapers, including The Jerusalem Report, The New York Times Magazine,
The Washington Post, The New Republic, Ha’aretz and Ma’ariv. He lives in
Jerusalem with his wife and three children.
