UNC Asheville Students Receive NOAA ScholarshipsUNC Asheville atmospheric science majors Amy Harless and Jacob Carley recently received National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Ernest F. Hollings Scholarships. The $8,000 scholarship was awarded by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education. Each will also receive a 10-week paid internship at any NOAA-approved facility next summer. The NOAA scholarship program, established in honor of Senator Hollings, prepares students for public service careers in oceanic and atmospheric science. About one hundred scholarships are awarded annually to undergraduate students interested in oceanic and atmospheric science, research, technology and education. “I feel that this scholarship has opened several doors for me within NOAA and graduate school. With my internship next summer, I will be able to gain experience and knowledge that will benefit my future immensely,” said Carley, who plans on interning at NOAA’s Environmental Modeling Center or the Storm Prediction Center.
