UNC Asheville to Observe Holocaust Education Week with Reading of Victims' Names, Lecture by SurvivorUNC Asheville will hold the annual observance of Holocaust Education Week with a reading of victims’ names and a lunchtime lecture by Holocaust survivor Hal Marienthal. Both events, which are sponsored by UNC Asheville’s Center for Jewish Studies and WNC Hillel, are free and open to the public. Students, faculty, staff and community members will read Holocaust victims’ names from 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Monday, April 24, and Tuesday, April 25, on UNC Asheville’s Ramsey Library Terrace. Holocaust survivor Hal Marienthal will discuss his acclaimed autobiography “Good Germans: A Child’s Fateful Journey Through Hitler’s Third Reich” at 12:15 p.m. Monday, April 24, in UNC Asheville’s Laurel Forum, Karpen Hall. Marienthal’s story details his escape from an orphanage at age six to eventual liberation under the Statue of Liberty. Widely acclaimed, reviewers have called “Good Germans” a “breathtaking thriller” and “a soul-riveting, heart-shattering personal account of the Holocaust.” Marienthal, who has been a writer, producer and performer in the film industry, currently teaches screenwriting at UNC Asheville.
