UNC Asheville Senior Receives $15,000 Windgate Fellowship Award

Joshua Copus, UNC Asheville senior art major, has been awarded a $15,000 Windgate Fellowship Award from the UNC Center for Craft, Creativity and Design. Fifty-three universities from across the United States were invited to each nominate two graduating seniors or fifth year art/craft students, their best and brightest, for one of the largest fellowship award programs offered nationally to art students. Student applicants completed an on-line application with images of their work, and a proposal defining how the $15,000 would advance their career. A panel of three nationally recognized arts professionals, reviewed the applications on the basis of artistic merit, the future promise of the individual's work, and potential for the applicant to make a contributions to the advancement of their field. Ten students were selected from the national pool, each receiving a $15,000 Windgate Fellowship. Images of the work and proposal summary of the ten 2006 Windgate Fellows can be found at www.craftcreativitydesign.org

Copus proposed using the Windgate Fellowship to set up a professional ceramics studio in Western North Carolina, using funds to construct a large wood-fired kiln and obtain the necessary equipment to process wild clay and glaze materials that are native the region. This builds on research into local and non-industrial processed materials in contemporary ceramics Copus began as an Undergraduate Research Scholar in the summer of 2005.

The Windgate Fellowship Award program is a three year pilot-program administered by the UNC Center for Craft, Creativity and Design in Hendersonville, N.C. The Center also partners with four museums awarding $5,000 Windgate Museum Internships. Museums in the 2006 program include the Museum of Fine Art, Houston, Texas; San Francisco Museum of Craft and Design; the Woodson Art Museum, Wausau, Wis.; and the Fuller Craft Museum, in Brockton, Mass.
