Switch up your usual Friday night routine of a dinner and a movie with an auditory journey to soulful Cuba this weekend.
UNC Asheville will host a performance by acclaimed Cuban jazz guitarist Freddie Bryant at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17, at UNC Asheville’s Humanities Lecture Hall. The concert, which is sponsored by UNC Asheville’s Office of Cultural & Special Events, is free and open to the public.
Bryant is noted as a well-versed musician, talented in both jazz and classical guitar. After earning a master’s degree in classical guitar from Yale University, Bryant hit the road with a number of noted musicians, including African singer Salif Keita, klezmer clarinetist Maestro Giora Feidman, and jazz trumpet great Tom Harrell. He has produced three CDs on the Fresh Sound label to rave reviews. His most recent release, “Live at Smoke,” is heralded as “some of the most technically and emotionally dazzling music I’ve ever heard,” by jazz studies expert Nina D’Alessandro.
