UNC Asheville to Host Performance by Native American
Dance Troupe
UNC Asheville will host a performance by the Turtle
Island Dancers at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, on UNC Asheville’s Quad.
The free performance is in honor of Native American Heritage Month,
which is celebrated November 1-30 nationwide each year.
The Turtle Island Dancers celebrate Native American
culture through authentic dance, drumming and song. The performance will
detail the Piscataway Indian Nation’s history, as well as current issues
facing the tribe. In the 17th century, the Piscataway Nation was a
central power in a confederation of many Native American nations.
Today the center of the Piscataway culture is
located in Accokeek, Md.
