UNC Asheville's Great Smokies Writing Program Offers Summer WorkshopsThe Great Smokies Writing Program, a consortium of the Western North Carolina writers' community and UNC Asheville, will offer three summer workshops. All courses qualify for one UNC Asheville credit hour in literature and language. Classes are open to all interested writers. Poet Pat Riviere-Seel will teach “What is Found There: Writing Poems as an Act of Discovery.” This course will meet at the Asheville School from 4-6:30 five times between June 6-28. Students in this class will explore new approaches on developing poems. Journalist Neal Thompson will teach “Publishing and Profit: How to Write and Sell Your Freelance Stories and Nonfiction Book Ideas.” This course will meet at the First Presbyterian Church of Asheville from 4-6:30 p.m. five times between June 6-29. In this workshop-style course, students will explore the inner-workings of the magazine and book-publishing world. Lori Hortvitz, writer and UNC Asheville assistant professor of literature and language, will give a workshop on “Flash Fiction/Microfiction.” This course will meet at the Asheville School from 6-8:30 p.m. five times between June 6-20. The workshop will help students construct stories with a minimal number of words and will include structured critiques, in-class writing and discussion of published texts. Cost is $20 for the visiting student application fee. Tuition and fees for these one-credit-hour courses is $68.98 for North Carolina residents.
