N.C. Center for Creative Retirement to Host Forum on the Future of Social Security

The North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement will host a forum on “The Future of Social Security” from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 3, at the Reuter Center on the UNC Asheville campus. Ridge Multop, AARP senior legislative representative in Washington, D.C., will present AARP’s position on how to ensure the long-term future of Social Security. Respondents include Loren Pinilis, a recent UNC Asheville alumnus and outspoken proponent of privatizing Social Security, and Joseph Sulock, UNC Asheville professor of economics, who will take a middle position. The program will begin with a hors d’oeuvres reception. The event is free and open to the public.

Multop is no stranger to the issues. His previous positions include senior economic advisor to the House Democratic Leader and Chief Economist of the House Committee on the Budget. Pinilis represents the view of many younger people who believe that Social Security, in its present form, will shrink significantly or disappear before his generation reaches the qualifying age. Sulock will examine the economic implications of the various proposals to “save” Social Security.

The forum is sponsored by the N.C. Center for Creative Retirement, the Land-of-Sky Area Agency on Aging and AARP North Carolina.
