UNC Asheville's Music Department Kicks Off 2005-06 SeasonUNC Asheville’s Music Department will kick off its 2005-06 concert season with three free lunchtime concerts. The events are open to the public and will be held in UNC Asheville’s Lipinsky Auditorium. The Smoky Mountain Brass Quintet will perform at 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24. The Smoky Mountain Brass Quintet, Western Carolina University’s quintet-in-residence, consists of P. Bradley Ulrich and David Ginn on trumpet, Alan F. Mattingly on horn, Daniel Cherry on trombone, and Michael Schallock on tuba. The Jazz Composers Forum Composers in Residence band will give a concert at 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31. The band is made up of Bill Gerhardt on piano, Mike Holstein on bass, Sonny Thorton on drums and Aimee Sullivan on saxophones. The Jazz Composers Forum is a nonprofit organization dedicated to presenting and documenting original instrumental jazz music. At 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, Wayne Kirby, UNC Asheville Music Department chair, will present a lecture and demonstration of Theremins and electronic effects designed by electronic music pioneer and Asheville resident Robert Moog. Eight additional concerts are planned for the fall semester, including the annual holiday concert. Spring semester performances will feature jazz, string ensembles, the University singers and more.
