UNC Asheville Spring Music Season Kicks Off with Free Concerts

UNC Asheville’s Music Department will kick off its spring concert season with two free performances in January. Both concerts will be held at 12:20 p.m. in UNC Asheville’s Lipinsky Auditorium.

Trombonist Richard Human will perform in recital on January 19. Joining Human will be UNC Asheville Director of Jazz Studies David Wilken, pianist Virginia McKnight, percussionists Joe Euzelli and Nick Knapp, and trombonists Bill Vernon and Matt Anderson. The program will include Douglas Yeo’s transcription of the duo from Cantata 140 by Bach, the Sulek Sonata vox Gabriel, Eric Ewazen’s Sonata for Trombone and Piano, and the first movement of Ewazen’s “Myths and Legends” for trombone quartet.

Canadian soprano Veronica Millicent Scarlett will take center stage on January 26. Scarlett has performed in numerous operas, including “Dido and Aeneas,” the North American premiere of “La Fiamminga” and “Vanqui.” As a winner of the Luciano Pavarotti International Voice Competition, she performed the role of Mrs. Ford in “Falstaff” along with Pavarotti and Leone Maggira. Scarlett currently resides in Maryland and is a professor at George Washington University.
