TheatreUNCA Kicks Off 2005-06 Season with "Marisol" September 28-October 2

Angel and Marisol
The Angel (Hickling) announces to Marisol (Meter)
the beginning of the angels' war in heaven.

What happens when the angels in heaven revolt and chaos ensues on earth? Find out when TheatreUNCA stages José Rivera’s Obie Award-winning play “Marisol” September 28-October 2 at UNC Asheville’s Carol Belk Theatre. This production, which kicks off UNC Asheville’s 2005-06 theatre season, is recommended for adult audiences only.

Part “Paradise Lost” and part “Mad Max,” “Marisol” is set in an apocalyptic New York City at the beginning of the millennium. The play follows the story of Marisol Perez, a young Puerto Rican woman, whose sense of reality is challenged when her guardian angel reveals plans to overthrow an aging, senile God. Social disorder on earth reigns during the rebellion in heaven: acid rain falls from the sky, apples and coffee become extinct, the sun stops rising, men bear children and horrific crime is rampant. The pious Marisol does her best to get along in this new world, struggling to maintain both her humanity and faith in the face of such dramatic changes.

“Marisol” is directed by Scott Walters, UNC Asheville associate professor of drama. Drama Department Chair and Associate Professor Rob Bowen designed lighting and sound, while Assistant Professor Robert Berls designed the set. Costumes were designed by Assistant Professor Ida. The all-student cast includes Diana Meter as Marisol Perez, Eric Cover as Lenny, Allison Flanagan as June and Stephanie Hickling as Angel.

Curtain is 8 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday with a matinee at 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $10 general admission, $8 senior citizens and $5 students. Because of the intimate size of Carol Belk Theatre and often heavy demand for tickets, advance purchase is strongly advised. Tickets may be charged by phone by calling 828/232-2291 between 10 a.m.-4 p.m. weekdays. Tickets are also available at the box office one hour before each curtain and online at www.unca.edu/drama.

For more information, call UNC Asheville’s Drama Department at 828/251-6610.
