UNC Asheville to Host Performance by Ewabo Caribbean Steel Orchestra
Noted music group Ewabo Caribbean Steel Orchestra will bring the sounds of the islands to UNC Asheville for a workshop and performance on April 28. Featuring the steel drum, known as “pan” in its native Trinidad and Tobago, Ewabo is considered one of the top steel orchestras in the United States. Events are free and open to the public. Ewabo will present a drumming workshop in UNC Asheville’s Highsmith University Union Mount Pisgah Room at noon. They will perform in concert at the Highsmith University Union Café at 8 p.m. Ewabo is the winner of two consecutive National Steelband Music Festival Championships and has performed for a wide variety of events including President Bill Clinton’s Presidential Inaugural Ball in Arkansas, Bluemont Concert Series, Human Rights Day and at numerous international embassies. Ewabo’s appearance is sponsored by UNC Asheville’s Black Student Association and the Multicultural Student Programs Office.
