UNC Asheville to Host Series of Ceramics Demonstrations

UNC Asheville’s Ceramics Program will host a series of demonstrations and lectures by top ceramic artists throughout November. The artists will demonstrate a variety of elements of their art, from the use of pre-fire approaches to the use of sculptures that act as their own kilns. All events are free and open to the public.

University of Minnesota Professor Emeritus Thomas Kerrigan will conduct a two-day workshop on creating clay sculptures using simple hand-building techniques. The workshop will take place from 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, and from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4, in Owen Hall room 143. A lunch break will be taken from noon-1:30 p.m. each day. In addition, Kerrigan will give a slide lecture detailing the development of his work over 30 years at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, in Owen Hall room 237.

Renowned Danish artist Nina Hole will give demonstrations from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, and 10 a.m.-noon on Friday, Nov. 11. A lunch break will be taken each day from noon-1:30 p.m. These events will take place in Owen Hall room 143. Hole will also give a slide lecture at 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 11, in Owen Hall room 237. A founding member of the Danish group “Clay Today,” Hole is known for her huge clay sculptures which act as their own kilns. Hole’s visit is made possible by the Center for Craft, Creativity & Design and the Artist-Blacksmith's Association of North America Forge Fund.
