N.C. Center for Creative Retirement to Host Screening of Baby Boomer Documentary;
"The Open Road: America Looks at Aging" Asks Boomers "What's Next?"

Baby Boomers once asked themselves, “What am I going to do when I grow up?” Now, as the first 77 million Boomers approach retirement age, they are asking, “What do I do next?”

This question is explored in the new documentary “The Open Road: America Looks at Aging” by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Nina Gilden Seavey. The film will be screened at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 12, at UNC Asheville’s Reuter Center. Ron Manheimer, N.C. Center for Creative Retirement director, will lead a discussion following the screening. Manheimer will be joined by a panel of experts to comment on the film as well as share the results of a yearlong study of Asheville-area Boomers that was conducted by the Center. The event is free and open to the public and refreshments will be served.

“Boomers seem to be rewriting the book on retirement,” said Manheimer. “All the surveys point to the fact that Boomers plan to work longer but want more flexibility.”

While filming “The Open Road: America Looks at Aging,” Seavey traveled the country to collect stories from people who have shaped and continue to shape their own answer to the question “What next?” Those featured in the one-hour film come from all walks of life: some revel in the freedom of jumping in their RV and hitting the highway, while others are anxious about defining a new sense of purpose in society. The program profiles people who have found themselves unprepared for the financial hardships of retirement and are forced to return to work as well as those who volunteer in a variety of ways that help to bring focus and purpose to their “Golden Years.” Aging experts offer insight on the issues that confront America as Boomers – the most active, educated, and vital demographic group of retirees the country has ever seen – prepare to retire.

The screening and discussion are sponsored by the N.C. Center for Creative Retirement.
