TheatreUNCA Brings "A Little House Christmas" to Life November 16-20

Ma, Laura and Pa Ingalls
Ma (Jessica Taylor), Laura (Kelly McNeely) and
Pa (Forrest Mason) Ingalls share a moment after dinner

The autobiographical Little House novels, written by Laura Ingalls Wilder, could be considered one of the most beloved children’s book series. Now, the Ingalls family will come to life on stage when TheatreUNCA presents James DeVita’s acclaimed adaptation, “A Little House Christmas” from November 16-20 at UNC Asheville’s Carol Belk Theatre.

This family-friendly play sends the audience back in time to the days of pioneer life and simple values, and celebrates Christmas on the prairie. Based on Wilder’s memories of growing up in the Midwest at the end of the 19th century, “A Little House Christmas” follows the Ingalls family and their friends through the week leading up to a memorable Christmas. Although Laura’s good behavior is tested by the insufferable Nellie Olesen, she and her sister, Mary, delight in helping their parents prepare for Christmas. When a storm hits, threatening to postpone Santa’s visit, Laura and Mary learn the true meaning of Christmas.

“A Little House Christmas” is directed by Danelle Smith, UNC Asheville visiting assistant professor of drama. Drama Department Chair and Associate Professor Rob Bowen designed lighting and sound, while UNC Asheville junior Ashleigh Poteat designed the set. Costumes were designed by Assistant Professor Ida. The all-student cast includes sophomore Kelly McNeely as Laura Ingalls, junior Lauren Jeffries as Mary Ingalls, senior Jessica Taylor as Ma Ingalls, sophomore Forrest Mason as Pa Ingalls, and senior Beth Chapman as Nellie Olesen.

Curtain is 7:30 p.m. Wednesday through Friday. Performances begin at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 19, and 2 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 20. Tickets are $10 general admission, $8 senior citizens and $5 students. Because of the intimate size of Carol Belk Theatre and often heavy demand for tickets, advance purchase is strongly advised. Tickets may be charged by phone by calling 828/232-2291 between 10 a.m.-4 p.m. weekdays. Tickets are also available at the box office one hour before each curtain and online at www.unca.edu/drama.
