UNC Asheville will host a performance of “Come Ye” by celebrated dance company Ronald K. Brown and EVIDENCE at 8 p.m. Friday, March 18, and Saturday, March 19, in the Diana Wortham Theatre. Grounded in African movement with modern dance elements, “Come Ye” pays tribute to jazz legend and Tryon, N.C. native Nina Simone, who died in 2003. Tickets are $30 general admission; $18 for UNC Asheville faculty and staff, College for Seniors students, UNC Asheville alumni and Western Carolina University students; $10 for children ages 12 and younger and $6 for UNC Asheville students.
Inspired by Simone’s music and socio-political activism, the dance piece features Brown’s signature style of storytelling through a fusion of African, modern ballet and social dance styles. “Come Ye” features the music of Simone and late Nigerian singer and composer Fela Kuti. The production also includes a video collage that features films of civil rights demonstrations and activists.
Ronald K. Brown and EVIDENCE have been praised extensively and have performed around the world. The Washington Post said that Brown’s choreography “has zoomed to the forefront of modern dance by virtue of its exquisitely sculpted movement and a compelling sense that dance springs from a deep well of spiritual urgency.”
