UNC Asheville to Host Talk on "The House of the Surgeon in Pompeii"CANCELLED DUE TO SPEAKER ILLNESS -- UNC Asheville will host a talk on “The House of the Surgeon in Pompeii” by noted classics scholar Lawrence J. Bliquez at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, in UNC Asheville’s Ramsey Library Whitman Room. The talk is free and open to the public. Bliquez is professor emeritus at the University of Washington, Seattle. His areas of specialization include Greco-Roman surgery and surgical tools. Bliquez is the author of several publications, including “Roman Surgical Instruments and Other Minor Objects in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples” and “Gynecology in Pompeii.” His work has been supported by such agencies as the American Philosophical Society, the American Council of Learned Societies and the Center for Hellenic Studies. Bliquez is former president of The Archeological Institute of America’s Seattle Society. The talk is co-sponsored by UNC Asheville’s Classics Department and the Archaeological Institute of America.
