UNC Asheville to Host Talk on Recovering Gladiator Tactics from Art

UNC Asheville will host a talk on “De Arte Gladiatoria: Recovering Gladiatorial Tactics from Artistic Sources” by archaeologist Steven Tuck, assistant professor of classics at Miami University, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 8, in UNC Asheville’s Ramsey Library Whitman Room. The talk will focus on reconstructing gladiator tactics from artistic representations of the ancient Roman world. The event is free and open to the public.

Tuck is a specialist in archaeology of the Roman provinces and has conducted field work in Italy, Greece and England. He holds a doctorate in classical art and archaeology from the University of Michigan. Tuck completed post-doctoral work as a Arthur and Joyce Gordon Fellow in Latin epigraphy at Ohio State University. Currently, he is finishing a book on a collection of Latin inscriptions at the University of Michigan’s Kelsey Museum.

The talk is co-sponsored by the UNC Asheville Classics Department and the Western Carolina Society of the Archaeological Institute of America.
