UNC Asheville Receives Grant Valued at $300,000 from Vitria;
Funds Will Establish a New Computer Science Course

UNC Asheville today announced that Vitria, a leading provider of business process integration solutions based in Sunnyvale, Calif., has awarded the University an educational software grant valued at $300,000. The gift of the latest version of the company's flagship product, the Vitria:BusinessWare™ business process integration platform, will be used to establish a new computer science course and to support undergraduate research projects.

Available to juniors and seniors for the Fall 2004 semester beginning in August, the new class will focus on application integration and business process management, the latest wave in computer programming and software development, according to Dr. Joe Brownsmith, principal investigator for the grant and UNCA assistant professor of computer science. "This grant will allow UNC Asheville students to do some pretty interesting projects, similar to what they will encounter on the job after graduation," Brownsmith said. "I am grateful to Vitria for providing our university students with the use of their state-of-the-art, award-winning business process integration solution," added Brownsmith.

Business process integration is used by businesses to allow different types of software systems to interact with each other. It is useful when several groups of users, all working on different computing platforms and in different locations, require access to the same information. One example would be in healthcare and the processing of insurance claims, where multiple organizations must exchange information electronically in order for healthcare providers and/or patients to receive prompt payment.

"The new class will be a great addition to the computer science curriculum at UNC Asheville," said Trent Griffin, a UNC Asheville senior computer information systems major. "The future of computer science will require more and more knowledge of business process management and systems integration and this class will be a step in the right direction for preparing students."
